Rubber bridge expansion joint uses rubber as the main elastic element. It is anchored to the deck with embedded plates or reinforcing bars and relies on the shear/compression deformation of the rubber to absorb horizontal movements (30–150 mm) caused by temperature, concrete shrinkage & creep, and vehicle loads. The common types are "plate" and "accordion": steel load-bearing plates are vulcanized inside the rubber; wheel loads are distributed by the plates while the rubber provides vertical stiffness and damping/noise reduction; anchor bolts integrate the whole unit with the beam ends. During installation the joint is kept flush and connected to the deck waterproofing.
Technical features
    *High elasticity and impact resistance, noticeably reducing vehicle bump and noise.
    *Simple, lightweight construction; can be cut and assembled on site for fast installation and low cost.
    *Neoprene or EPDM compounds resist ozone, oil and ageing; design life 8–12 years.
    *Internal force rises with movement; ≥30 mm movement reserve is required. Not suitable when movement >150 mm.

Construction & maintenance
    *Before installation check rubber hardness, tensile strength and surface defects against specifications.
    *After cleaning, groove evenness ≤2 mm; weld anchorage bars ≥3d length; re-torque bolts to design value.
    *After opening to traffic, remove debris every half-year, flush de-icing salts in winter; replace immediately if rubber cracks or steel plates are exposed.
